And not without success: 'The Ballad of Ira Hayes', about the story of Ira Hayes, a young Marine from the Pima tribe, reached number 3 on the country charts. The album is a sensitive and clear-eyed look at the unfair treatment of American Indians. It's gritty and moving, his best Americana album of the 1960s.
