Lady In Satin, presented here in both stereo and mono, is Billie Holiday's last big hit and her penultimate album. It represents something very close to her swan song. Although there are several live recordings after the Columbia album and she even made a second album with Ray Ellis for MGM, none of them were as enduring as Lady in Satin. Most jazz fans consider Lady in Satin to be Holiday's last great recording. The mono version appears here in its entirety on CD for the first time. Some of Billie's last live performances have been added as bonus tracks, including a complete concert at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1958 and a set from the Storyville Club in Boston in 1959. In the late 1950s, it was common for major labels to record performances simultaneously in mono and stereo and then release both versions simultaneously with different reference numbers. At the time, this was explained by the fact that stereo was still a very recent innovation and not everyone had sound systems capable of reproducing this new technology. Stereo albums were therefore slightly more expensive than their mono counterparts. Over time, the mono versions fell into obscurity, and only recently have some music fans begun to appreciate these long-forgotten masterpieces that present classical performances from a different acoustic perspective. On this CD you can compare the two versions of this masterpiece.
