Decca Records will release 'CHUCK' on June 16, the last major label album and first new recordings in nearly four decades from the founder of rock and roll, the legendary Chuck Berry, who passed away last week at the age of 90.'CHUCK' features ten new recordings, eight of which were composed by Berry. It is his first album since 1979's 'Rock It.' The new material was recorded and produced by Berry at various studios around St. Louis with his longtime hometown backing band - which includes his children Charles Berry Jr. (guitar) and Ingrid Berry (harmonica, vocals), plus Jimmy Marsala (Berry's bass guitar player for 40 years), Robert Lohr (piano) and Keith Robinson (drums). The latter accompanied him for nearly two decades on more than two hundred residencies at the famous Blueberry Hill Club. The album also features guest appearances by Gary Clark Jr, Tom Morello, Nathaniel Rateliff and Chuck's grandson Charles Berry III. Celebrated writer and historian Douglas Brinkley contributed a foreword, with both Morello and Rateliff appearing on the track 'Big Boys,' which Brinkley called "the national anthem of guitarists" in his liner notes. "While our hearts have grown heavy in these moments, we know he would want nothing more than to see this album released for the world to see. We can think of no better way to celebrate and commemorate ninety years of his life than through his music. "Some of the songs on 'CHUCK' were given shape in the 1980s, when Berry spent years churning them out in his home studio in St. Louis in between concert tours. He dedicated 2014 to the preparation of the album. When failing health forced him to stop touring and recording in 2015, Berry continued to oversee the production and preparation of 'CHUCK,' commissioning his family and close friend Joe Edwards, owner of Blueberry Hill, to fulfill his wish to complete and release the album.From the album's peak, 'Lady B. Goode,' a spiritual sequel to the iconic 'Johnny B. Goode,' featuring breathtaking solos by three generations of Berry guitarists, to the poignant country ballad 'Darlin',' a duet with his daughter Ingrid - 'CHUCK' is truly a family affair.
