Whitlock (org, voc); Carl Radle (b); Tex Johnson (bgo, cga); Jim Gordon (dr) This 42-minute live album, recorded in Croydon, England, in late 1969 and rated five stars by Rolling Stone magazine, is not only the culmination of Delaney & Bonnie's work, but also the link between the future careers of Eric Clapton and George Harrison. On this tour, Clapton played the same blend of country, blues and gospel that has characterized his early solo performances since 1970. Throughout, he rose to the occasion with dazzling virtuosity, and highlights included a dizzying solo on "I Don't Want To Discuss It," a long "slowhand" section on "Only You Know And I Know" and a dry, passionate introduction to the beautifully tuned "Coming Home." Vocally, Delaney & Bonnie have never been better than on this show, and the eleven-piece band sounds musically tighter than many quartets of the era, whether playing longer blues or a medley of Little Richard songs. It's no coincidence that the band featured here became Clapton's own studio lineup for his first solo record, nor that the core of that group - Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle and Jim Gordon - morphed into Derek & the Dominos; nor that most of the entire band also became the group that played with George Harrison on All Things Must Pass and The Concert For Bangladesh, only the interplay here (not to mention the recording) is better. Half of the musicians on that record nearly became superstars less than a year later, and while their fame didn't last, it was justified listening to this live performance today. This Speakers Corner production was produced using 100% analog mastering and taping. All licenses and GEMA fees have been paid.
