"Far East Suite" is Ellington's last completed collaboration with his musical partner and alter ego Billy Strayhorn, who died five months after recording. "Isfahan," for example, is a quintessential Strayhorn ballad in the tradition of the elusive "Chelsea Bridge," which Johnny Hodges' alto sax takes to the next level up, where the air is pretty thin: into the heaven of immortal jazz interpretations. Notwithstanding these stellar moments of improvised music, however, the entire nine-movement work (four movements of which are included in alternate versions) is one of the most beautiful and accomplished of the many suites of Ellington's late years."
