Just as impressive as their four previous studio albums, Earth Wind & Fire was primarily a live band, as evidenced on "Gratitude". The live portion of the album features unedited recordings, extended solos and arrangements, and wonderful new songs ("Sun Goddess", "New World Symphony") of a progressive nature. Maurice White's brilliant thinking and vision may be the guiding light of this ensemble, but it never feels as if everything is guided by him. The live versions of "Yearnin' Learnin'," "Devotion" and "Sun Goddess" (written and recorded by jazz legend Ramsey Lewis) are funky and jazzy. The most striking live track is "Reasons," a vocal concerto by Phillip Bailey.
