Ensiferum are real powerhouses when it comes to folk-inspired melodic death metal, and their eighth studio album Thalassic is a convincing proof of that. Taking its name from the ancient Greek word for something that comes from or relates to the sea, the songs included are as expansive as they are expansive, as the familiar combination of orchestral bombast and traditional acoustic instrumentation clash with distorted guitars, bass and drums. "I think musically we've evolved a bit again, but at the same time we've kept the best elements of our previous sound," says bassist and vocalist Sami Hinkka. "A lot of it sounds very classic - nice folk melodies, kicking riffs, diverse vocal styles and choruses you can scream along to. Thalassic, however, stands out from the Ensiferum catalogue mainly because the band is following a thematic leitmotif for the first time. The idea came to me while I was interviewing Two Roads. Journalists asked me about the basic concept and I realized that we don't offer anything like that because of our compositional style. This fact annoyed me more and more, so I decided to do it: There will be a common thread running through the lyrics on our next record. I don't know yet if we will do this in the future, but for once I wanted to write lyrics in this way. Thalassic was recorded and produced in the Petrax and Sonic Pump studios by Janne Joutsenniemi, who has guided the band on the albums Victory Songs (2007) and From Afar (2009). Since the songs are mostly 99.9% finished in the studio, the producer's main job is just to light a fire under our asses during the recording process. Janne Joutsenniemi is undoubtedly a world-class producer, which is why we asked him for advice when we had doubts about the details. Working with him was once again a pleasure and probably has never been as easy for us as this time. We are extremely happy with the result!"
