The album was produced by Gil Norton, who also produced the band's previous album There Is Nothing Left to Lose. One By One was the band's first album to feature drummer Taylor Hawkins. The first single from the album, "All My Life", was a chart success and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. The album was well received by music critics, who praised the band's songwriting and musicianship. The album One By One was commercially successful, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and eventually selling over two million copies in the United States. The album was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. One By One is often considered the band's best album. It is ranked 417th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. The album was also included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
