Director Miloš Forman, who won an Oscar for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1976), created a film adaptation of the 1979 Broadway musical hit Hair. It starred John Savage, Beverly D'Angelo, Nicholas Ray and most notably Treat Williams, who was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Newcomer for his role as the charismatic hippie Berger. The story of a rural Oklahoma boy who meets a group of hippies on the eve of enlisting in the army and falls in love with a high society girl touched millions in its day. Surprisingly, the film was more successful in Germany than in the US, probably due to the Vietnam theme, which is fully developed in the film's moving final scene. Among the outstanding songs by Canadian composer Galt MacDermot are world hits such as "Let The Sunshine In", "Aquarius", "Good Morning, Starshine", "I Got Life" and "Hare Krishna". Incidentally, the soundtrack also includes the songs "Abie Baby / Fourscore", "Air", "My Conviction", "Frank Mills" and "What A Piece Of Work Is Man", which were recorded for the film but were not used in the final version of the film.
