Today, it seems inconceivable that Genesis would ever release an album that didn't make the UK charts when it was first released. But as their audience grew in the early days, it happened in 1970 with Trespass and the following year with Nursery Cryme. Both appeared in the charts after the band had established themselves, although Trespass has only spent one week in the charts to date, at number 98, a full 14 years after its release in 1984. Nursery Cryme also made a belated and brief appearance, but among die-hard Genesis fans, it's one of the most revered albums in their canon. The success of Selling England By The Pound, which reached the top three of the charts in the autumn of 1973 and stayed there for three months the following spring, sparked renewed interest in the Genesis catalogue. At the same time, the band made their first appearance on the singles chart with "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)", which was released as a top five single from the album and reached number 21 in the UK. On 11 May 1974, Cryme reached number 39 on the charts for exactly seven days. At the same time, Selling England remained in the Top 20, rising 18-17 places in its 16th week. Ten years later, in 1984, Cryme reappeared at No. 68 for one week. Nursery Cryme's boldly inventive album features some of the signature tracks of Genesis' early progressive years, such as "The Musical Box" and "The Return Of The Giant Hogweed". The LP featured Phil Collins on drums (and he sang for the first time on "For Absent Friends") and guitarist Steve Hackett, creating a classic lineup of the band from the early and mid-'70s.
