Three cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach will be performed at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig under the direction of Thomaskantor Gotthold Schwarz. The recording was made at the end of May 2020 and the video was broadcast worldwide as the opening concert of the Bach Marathon 2020 on the Leipzig Bach Festival channels. It replaced the opening concert of the Leipzig Bach Festival, which was cancelled this year. There, the St. Thomas Boys Choir would actually perform Cantata 29 in its usual choral formation for the opening. Now the cantata was performed in a video broadcast with a small or solo ensemble. Several male voices from the St. Thomas Boys Choir and other guests make up the choir, which is cast with three to four singers per voice, following the model of Johann Sebastian Bach. The Saxon Baroque Orchestra performs as soloist. Cantata 11, Oratorio of the Ascension, and Cantata 117, Be Praise and Honor to the Highest Good, Thomaskantor Gotthold Schwarz has selected two other resonant cantatas. The small ensemble and the excellent soloists shine with great joy in making music, making this recording the pinnacle of Bach performance.
