On Metacritic, which assigns a standardized rating out of 100 to reviews by mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 85, which means "general acclaim". Heather Phares of AllMusic gave the album 4.5 stars out of 5 and wrote: "Only Lovers Left Alive is a haunting, hypnotic album that is as beautiful as it is dark."
