The album opens with the hit Carry On Wayward Son. Kenny Livgren wrote this song as a follow-up to the last track "The Pinnacle" from the previous album "Masque". Rolling Stone called "Leftoverture" Kansas' best album: it "guarantees Kansas a place right up there with Boston and Styx as one of the freshest new American bands, combining hard-hitting group instrumentation (with a dearth of ashy solos) with short, dense melodic lines and pleasing vocals."
