Im März letzten Jahres legte er dann überraschend mit »untitled unmastered« ein neues Werk vor, um die Wartezeit auf die nun kommende LP zu verkürzen: Auch diese »unfertigen, titellosen Rohversionen« eroberten direkt die Spitze der Billboard-200.

Mit einem neuen Album festigt er seine Position auf demjenigen Thron, auf dem er nun schon seit Jahren sitzt: Bevor der »König von Compton« (Der Spiegel) im Sommer seinen Dreißigsten feiert, läutet er nun das vierte Kapitel seiner Ausnahmekarriere ein.

It was also awarded to Kendrick Lamar when he released his remarkable debut Good Kid, M.A.A.D City in 2012. It was too early to make any hasty judgments at the time, but time has proven the glorifications right. In recent years, Lamar has been confirming his exceptionalism with a slew of albums, including the new one DAMN.If you don't mind losing, we can have a good argument: who is really rap's number one and what is the main factor? Juicy flow? Colourful, strong atmosphere-laden lyrics that engulf you? Punchlines that knock your teeth out and burn themselves into your memory like a brand? Social integrity and solidarity with the oppressed? "How are we going to get respect if we don't have respect for ourselves?" he said of the movement after the Ferguson incident, alienating a number of first-minded activists.The long-awaited new album DAMN. differs in many ways from both To Pimp a Butterfly and last year's rarit untitled unmastered compilation. The genesis of Lamar's persona didn't stop at declaring his racial affiliation this time. "I'm an Israelite, I'm not a black man, the word speaks of color but not at all of facts," Lamar references the biblical book of Deuteronomy in the song FEAR. about the journey to the promised land. The song's message is unexpectedly dark in the context of Lamar's previous work: the diaspora-dispersed African-Americans have been cursed by God because they have sinned against his commands. But the twenty-nine-year-old rapper doesn't indulge in negativity; rather, he delves deeper into contemplation of his fate and the fate of his brothers and sisters.When Lamar unveiled the tracklist for the new album, there was anticipation of what guest appearances by three big names - U2, Rihanna and singer Zacari - would sound like. But the collaboration with the former in the song XXX. is one of the highlights of DAMN. One thing can be said with certainty about Lamar's fourth album - it is his most chaotic to date, shot across a wide spectrum from hard rap bangers (HUMBLE.) to sweet radio hits (LOYALTY. with guest Rihanna). In many cases, the songs break into two or three distinct beats over the course of their footage, as if to say to fans and media alike, , "Choose who you want me to be. I can be whoever I want to be. "Kendrick Lamar is a chameleon. After previous experiments with P-funk and free jazz, Lamar has flipped the switch and not lost his way. DAMN. is a raw bipolar account of a genius torn between fame and commitment as well as a meditation on a bloody history, the current post-Obama era and an uncertain future.
