King Crimson spent 1970 as a studio band recording the single "Catfood" and two albums, "In the Wake of Poseidon" and "Lizard". "Catfood" was released in March and earned the band an appearance on the BBC's flagship music show "Top of the Pops". "Poseidon" followed in May. While McDonald and Giles announced their intention to leave in December 1969 and Greg Lake was due to leave in April 1970, Giles and Lake appeared on the single and album with Peter Giles (formerly Giles, Giles & Fripp) and new members Keith Tippett, Mel Collins and Gordon Haskell - alongside Fripp and Sinfield. As a result, the album shares some similarities in approach and sound with the band's debut, "In the Court of the Crimson King", and has been very popular with fans since its initial release. Although the album was made with a transitional line-up, it sounds remarkably cohesive. Like their debut album, "Poseidon" was self-produced and shows more confidence in the use of the recording studio. The range of recorded material is even wider than on the debut. The short track "Peace" appears in three different arrangements and complements the album's longer tracks. One of the band's finest ballads, "Cadence & Cascade," segues into the powerful title track, while the album version of "Catfood" is followed by "The Devil's Triangle," an ambitious sonic collage that seems to owe more to its roots in contemporary classical and free jazz than any form of rock music. The short burst of "In the Court of the Crimson King" in the final section of the song eerily anticipates modern sampling techniques. Upon its release, "Poseidon" reached #4 in the UK album chart - one place higher than the debut and the highest UK chart position the band has ever achieved. This album release includes the single version of "Catfood" and its b-side "Groon" as additional tracks, presenting King Crimson's studio recordings from this period on one CD for the first time.
