This 2-CD history of King Crimson contains many selected tracks that appear on the CD for the first time, including many tracks in the current line-up. This set is packaged in a DigiPack-style booklet with a 24-page booklet and includes introductory notes by Robert Fripp and liner notes by Sid Smith. While this seventh edition of the Tour Box series is in the spirit of the previous editions, it is also a Tour Box that is very different from its contemporaries and, because it has to stand alongside and represent the tour that should have been (and will be in 2021), it also stands somewhat apart. What themes and stories should a box created for a postponed tour tell? Like the previous tour boxes, the Elements 2020 box covers the entire spectrum of Crimsoning, this time with music and lineups from 1969-2019. The first disc presents a selection of material that is mostly live and mostly new on CD, including 4 tracks from the 2019 tour. The second disc, in keeping with the theme of Sid's notes discussed below, features tracks occasionally played by the current line-up - Exiles and Sheltering Sky, studio tracks - both King Crimson and Robert Fripp - that were never completed or variously worked on, material that never made it onto a studio recording - The Errors, Dr. Diamond, Trees (excerpt), Guts on my Side, etc., which together form a compelling musical counterpoint to the band. The sleeve notes by KC historian Sid Smith present a number of very likely "what if" scenarios. His 2,000-word essay begins in 1969 and traces the band's counterfactual history, if various tours hadn't been cancelled or postponed, if various members hadn't left or joined, if they hadn't taken the paths King Crimson might have taken, if things had gone a little differently along the way.
