He wrote the Commodores' biggest hits such as Easy and Three Times a Lady. When Richie found success as a songwriter for other artists, the collaboration with the group broke up. Richie wrote the American hit Lady for country singer Kenny Rogers. In 1981, Richie reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 with the title song from the film Endless Love, a duet with Diana Ross.
