Very underrated: the Marriner years in Stuttgart Sir Neville Marriner did not have an easy task as chief conductor of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1983 to 1989, and thus as successor to the great charismatic and sound fanatic Sergiu Celibidache, but during his Stuttgart years he set his own clearly contrasting accents: Marriner's orchestral ideal was not so much a meticulously modelled sound, but above all lightness, virtuosity and flexibility, agile rather than exploratory in duet. This compilation of Marriner's Stuttgart recordings offers a repertoire that many music lovers do not necessarily associate with Marriner: German and Russian Romanticism, all of Beethoven's overtures, all of Schumann's symphonies, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov, as well as the highlights of the 20th century. From Gustav Mahler to Béla Bartók, Benjamin Britten and Arthur Honegger to George Gershwin, the music is always fresh and extremely sympathetic. It is remarkable that Marriner has not only tried to transfer the lean sound of his Academy of St. Martin in the Fields to the German Radio Orchestra, but has created a decidedly individual sound with the Stuttgart orchestra long before that, before one of Marriner's successors, Roger Norrington, inflated the 'Stuttgart sound' into a trademark - an aspect that has been little appreciated, but which is striking and impressive in the overall view of Marriner's 'Stuttgart years'.
