Furtwängler's Beethoven on vinyl: 9 symphonies in recordings from 1948-1954 No other symphonic cycle captivated conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler as much as this one: Beethoven's nine symphonies - the pinnacle of orchestral music par excellence, the symbol of the classical tradition. Unfortunately, Furtwängler was never able to make a complete recording of the great "Nine Sisters" under the same conditions. However, at least in the later phase of his work between 1948 and 1954, he did provide some important documents which now form such an edition: In the Musikvereinssaal in Vienna, he was able to record Symphonies Nos. 1 and 3 to 7 in studio conditions, so to speak. With the second and eighth albums, famous live recordings were made in London and Stockholm. Furtwängler's mature late Ninth Symphony is legendary: the work, which he personally regarded as his shrine, was performed in 1951 at the reopening of the Bayreuth Festival Theatre after the Second World War. Performed with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Elisabeth Höngen, Hans Hopf and Otto Edelmann, it made one of the most important recordings of the work ever - and now forms a major cycle on vinyl LP with other Furtwängler Beethoven documents.
