Every music lover knows that the final concerts of a long tour are always a special event. Audiences everywhere have already read in previous weeks how much the band has been celebrated night after night at previous shows, and now they are even more excited to see their heroes in person. The band is in great shape thanks to numerous gigs, they are perfectly rehearsed and naturally want to top everything at the last gig. One such tour finale took place on 19 April 2018 at Birmingham's Symphony Hall. The British rock band Magnum finished their 42-show Road To Eternity tour there and reached the highest level. The evening was captured for posterity and released via Steamhammer/SPV. "It was a really magical evening," confirms guitarist Tony Clarkin, "especially as the gig was a sort of home game for us, as we all come from the area between Birmingham and Wolverhampton, but we've only played Birmingham once in the last 20 years. So it was a special moment for Magnum in a number of ways." In keeping with the situation, band members Tony Clarkin, vocalist Bob Catley, bassist Al Barrow and their two new additions, keyboardist Rick Benton and drummer Lee Morris, sovereignly played a successful mix of classic and newer songs which saw the band continue their long tradition of atmospheric rock numbers. Loudly cheered on by the crowd, Magnum went into a real frenzy, singing hits like "'How Far Jerusalem", "'Vigilante", "Don't Wake The Lion (Too Old To Die Young)" and "The Spirit" and emphatically proving, that even the more recent tracks from 2018's Lost On The Road To Eternity studio album, namely "Peaches And Cream," "Show Me Your Hands," "Lost On The Road To Eternity" and "Without Love," are sheer concert grenades with anthemic quality. "As we all know, there's a big difference between the studio and the stage," Clarkin explains. "In the studio, a lot of times as a band you're trying to make a song sound perfect. On stage, on the other hand, you only get one shot. But if you get it right, the studio version gets a good dose of extra adrenaline and playfulness and becomes even more vibrant, more intoxicating, more unique." Star guest Tobias Sammet (Avantasia, Edguy) was also swept away by this joy of playing and the blazing interaction between the musicians and the Birmingham audience. He took to the stage during 'Lost On The Road To Eternity' and - as he had done during the studio recording of the track - actively supported singer Bob Catley. As a brief between-the-lines note, by the way: as a precursor to this thrilling live album, 'Lost On The Road To Eternity' will be released as a digital single on 2 November 2018. "Birmingham was one of those nights when everything was just right," Clarkin looks back on the April 2018 show. "The sound on stage was phenomenal and you could tell from the audience reaction that it sounded fabulous in the room too. When a spark jumps between a band and their fans, something special, something magical can happen. That's exactly what happened in Birmingham." In conclusion, then, there is only one question: what makes Live At The Symphony Hall different from previous Magnum live discs. "Bob and I have been doing this band for a few days longer, but we've never lost our enthusiasm for Magnum," explains Clarkin. "We're always looking to learn and are open to advice and tips. So we're always updating older songs, sometimes playing them a little faster, sometimes a little slower, changing a solo or melody here and there. This has helped us keep the audience's interest as well as our own fun with these numbers." The magic of Live At The Symphony Hall can hardly be described more succinctly.
