In a contemporary review for The Village Voice, Robert Christgau stated that the album "does not maintain the perfection of its predecessors", but nevertheless found it "a pleasure to hear these guys work within their limits". Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic said in a retrospective review that the album "doesn't have the impact of their first two albums, but it's still a strong record that shows the band moving in new directions".
