Since their founding in 1990, they've been combining death metal, classic rock, progressive rock, folk and even free jazz influences into an ever-changing whole with unparalleled ease. Their roots in gloomy Scandinavian death metal are certainly undeniable, but the emotional and melodic accents found on their tenth studio album "Heritage" herald a new chapter in their career. Frontman, vocalist, guitarist, songwriter and longtime band member Mikael Åkerfeldt has managed to take a big artistic step forward with his band without sacrificing the spirit of previous albums to do so. "I have become synonymous with Opeth," he says, alluding to his penchant for perfection and the fact that he is responsible for these - conscious - changes. "I've been writing material since the first album. I've been steering the ship for many years now and I'm quite happy. It's something I created, and the people who worked with me in Opeth helped make it an exceptional band. "The latest album from the virtuosos from Stockholm, Sweden is a dense labyrinth of tempo changes, experimentation and peculiar rhythms. At the same time, Opeth knows how to squeeze a lot of emotion, cheerfulness and optimism into their songs. The basic tenor is of course rather dark, but " Heritage " takes the band into lighter realms as well. Opeth are as precise, focused and passionate as ever on their latest release. In the realm of "Heritage", they have truly managed to achieve more with less and more with less at the same time. At first glance, the songs seem catchy, but when you delve deeper into them, you discover incredible complexity.
