BOBEK PAVEL
In the famous American studio Quad in Nashville, where Neil Young's most famous recording Harvest and also the new star Mylie Cyrus were recorded, Pavel Bobek recorded an album of Johnny Cash cover versions under the supervision of producer Lubos Malina from Druhá tráva. In addition to another Czech, singer Robert Křestan, leading studio musicians from Nashville helped with the recording. Grammy winner Victor Krauss (Lyle Lovett's bandleader, also known for his collaboration with his sister, singer Alison Krauss) takes the double bass, Guthrie Trapp (e.g. Garth Brooks, Travis Tritt, Alison Krauss) and Steve Walsh (collaborations with Erasure, Norah Jones...) record the guitar parts, and Jerry Roe (e.g. Michelle Branch, also drummed on the last series of the TV competition American Idol) sits behind the drums.
The double bass on the album is played by the most important musician for this project, Johnny Cash's long-time double bassist Dave Roe, who accompanied the "man in black" in the last years of his concert career.
"Recording an album in America and with such musicians is a dream I never dared to dream of," says Pavel Bobek, who met Johnny Cash in 1978 and eventually sang with him. "Cash was performing at the American Embassy in Prague at the time. Before the concert I told him that I liked his song Sunday Morning Coming. And when he sang it, he invited me on stage," Bobek recalls.
The idea to record an album of Cash's cover versions was conceived by Universal. "It was after the success of Dylan's similarly conceived Second Grass." It was Malina who came up with the idea of recording the album in the place where Cash lived, Nashville, Tennesee, USA.
"The Czech singer Saša Langošová, who is currently recording a new album with her band November 2nd with Nashville producer and guitarist Steve Walsh, helped me find the right collaborators and studio in Nashville. Steve ended up building a band for Pavel Bobek consisting of leading musicians and brought in Cash's bandmate Dave Roe. Johnny Cash's other bandmate Charlie McCoy on harmonica and Paul Franklin (e.g. Sting, Mark Knopfler) on pedal steel guitar also promised to record his parts. The album was finally finalized and mixed at Union Street Recording studio.Mastering was provided by Jiri Mašek from Good Day Records, already experienced in the Czech Republic.
In addition to the Nashville musicians, however, people will also hear leading Czech bluegrass and country musicians on the album. For example, the song Sunday Morning Coming Down is a duet with Robert Křesťan, the well-known Highway Man was sung with Bobek by Míša Leicht from Cop, again by Křesťan and Wabi Daněk. In It Ain't Me, Babe the vocals of Cash's wife June Carter were replaced by Pavlína Jíšová.
Among Cash's other hits, fans can look forward to Walk The Line, As Long As I Live, That Old Wheel, Long Black Veil, Happiness Is You and Girl From The North Country. The latter duet with Christian is the link between the aforementioned Dylan's Second Grass: it is this song, performed solo by Christian, that closes the album.
Robert Křesťan and Pavlína Jíšová, in addition to their interpretative participation, also shared some Czech lyrics. Pavel Vrba, Mirek Černý, Vladimír Poštulka or Adéla Lounková helped with the translation of others.
