Während die Scorpions sich in Europa noch langsam nach oben strampelten, waren sie in Japan bereits eine anerkannte Größe, und »Virgin Killer« war das erste Album, das im Land der aufgehenden Sonne vergoldet wurde. Es war also höchste Zeit für die erste Reise in den Fernen Osten. Vier Monate nach Veröffentlichung von »Taken By Force« traf die Gruppe 1978 in Tokio ein. Vier Konzerte standen auf dem Programm, jeweils eines in Osaka und Nagoya und zwei in Tokios Nakano Sun Plaza. Diese beiden Shows wurden für das Live-Doppelalbum »Tokyo Tapes« mitgeschnitten, das auch als Abschiedsgeschenk für den scheidenden Uli Jon Roth gedacht war. »Tokyo Tapes« dokumentiert eindrucksvoll, was die Scorpions schon immer ausgezeichnet hat: Ihre mitreißende und elektrisierende Live-Präsenz, ungemeine Spielfreude, eine Intimität mit ihrem Publikum, die Gänsehaut erzeugt, und natürlich musikalische und technische Brillanz. In Tokio war die klassische Besetzung mit den beiden herausragenden Gitarristen Rudolf Schenker und Uli Jon Roth sowie dem charismatischen Frontmann Klaus Meine in der Form ihres Lebens. Sie spielten mit den Songs, änderten sie nach Lust und Laune, bezogen das Publikum ein und nahmen sich die Freiheit zur Improvisation. Ein gutes Beispiel ist «Fly To The Rainbow». Die Band verändert den Song während des Spielens, und Uli Jon Roth amüsiert sich nach Kräften mit seinem Effekt-Brett. Er lässt die Gitarre dröhnen, schreien, klagen und singen und setzt dann an zu einem Solo, das zu den besten Soli der Rockgeschichte gehören dürfte. »Tokyo Tapes« ist ein grandioses Livealbum, das die Energie und die Spielfreude der Band nahezu perfekt einfängt. Scorpions 50th Birthday: remastered Tokyo Tapes In 2015, Scorpions celebrates its 50th anniversary. To celebrate the band's birthday, they are therefore coming up with something very special for their fans: the "50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition". In this edition, Scorpions re-release a number of different studio and live albums. In addition, the band has pulled a number of previously unreleased tracks from their archives, including rare live recordings, alternate versions of their songs and rough mixes. The band's first live album "Tokyo Tapes" is also being released in a remastered version. The original album was released in Europe in 1978. A year later it was released in the USA. The recordings were made on April 24 and 27, 1978 at Sun Plaza Hall in Tokyo, Japan. The shows were part of the legendary "Taken By Force" tour - the last series of concerts the Scorpions played with their then-guitarist Uli Jon Roth before his departure from the band. For the "50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" the recordings have been completely re-mastered and are now being released as a double CD and also as a complete set consisting of a double LP and a double CD. In addition to the 18 original songs on the album, the second CD includes previously unreleased live recordings of "Polar Nights", "Hell Cat", "Catch Your Train", "He's A Woman, She's A Man", "Robot Man" and the Japanese anthem "Kimi Ga Yo". The new deluxe edition of the CD also includes a 16-page booklet with new liner notes by Edgar Klüsener, former editor-in-chief of Metal Hammer magazine. Scorpions have been on the scene for 50 years. Now they show how they started with "Tokyo Tapes", a remastered version of their legendary first live album. In addition to "Tokyo Tapes", the anniversary series also includes "World Wide Live", "Taken By Force", "Lovedrive", "Animal Magnetism", "Blackout", "Love At First Sting" and "Savage Amusement".
