Originally intended to be a seven-inch follow-up to the self-titled debut, Sonic Youth's first album Confusion Is Sex blossomed into a brain-crushing, utterly arid work of dissonance and confusion, the perfect soundtrack for escaping the chain gang near the SIN club. This was the sound of New York in 1983, nothing like the ringing roots of college radio rock that was beginning to take shape in Athens, Georgia. It sounded like no other in the world, for that matter. Wharton Tiers' raw eight-track production is dark, Kim Gordon's scribbled drawing of Thurston Moore on the cover is dark, Lee Ranaldo's photo collage on the back cover and the crumpled xeroxed images of Catherine Ceresole that adorned the inside are dark. It's an album that takes Sonic Youth from their first EP almost back to true ugly lo-fi primitiveness. The exposed arsenal of junk guitars and the implementation of alternative tunings grew, as did the songs, which matched the individual attributes of each instrument: some of them moaned and growled in specific ways that made the band realise that they themselves could become the compositional germ of a song. Here's the threshold of a new explosion of creativity from the band, who replaced the relatively cleaner buzz of the Sonic Youth EP with guitars that spew shattered, uglier chunks of sound everywhere, held down by a menacing minimalist bass (actually played by Thurston halfway through this LP, and for the first time ever on Lee's 'Protect Me You') and Jim Sclavunos' brutal-but-controlled metronomic drumming, complemented by substitute drummer Bob Bert's remarkable bashing on 'Making the Nature Scene' and a grotty no-fi live rendition of 'I Wanna Be Your Dog'.' Hearing the opening track 'Inhuman' with its crashing window and the screeching of subway brakes on 'The World Looks Red', you can confirm that although Sonic Youth weren't yet using guitars in the fully controlled and lyrical way that they would later on albums like Evol, Daydream Nation and others, they were well aware of the colours and tones that were developing and the possibilities that were presented. They were also beginning to understand how to add colour to chaos with spirited, simmering moments like Gordon's 'Shaking Hell' and Renaldo's chimerical, home-recorded 'Lee is Free'. 'Making the Nature Scene' and 'The World Looks Red' even throw in glimpses of a hip hop vocal approach far ahead of its time, albeit through a mixer. Though its confrontational nature may have put off some critics, time has rewarded Confusion with a truly distinctive air and atmosphere in the Sonic discography, enough for Moore to declare it his favourite along with the band's swan song The Eternal.
