"Help!" was released on August 6, 1965, eight months after the release of Beatles For Sale. Like the film A Hard Day's Night, Help! contained songs from the film on one side, while the other side was devoted to other new recordings, including two cover versions. Unlike the A Hard Day's Night album, the two singles released before and along with the album had exclusive b-sides. Help! also marked the return of George Harrison as a songwriter. George contributed one song to each side of the album. The album's eye-catching cover depicts the Beatles creating semaphore characters that do not signify Help! The album reached number one in the UK charts and stayed in the top twenty for a total of nine out of 37 weeks. In the US, it was different again. Another soundtrack album was released, which included all the songs from the first side of the UK album and six instrumental tracks composed by Ken Thorne. The result was another US number one, which stayed in the chart for nine weeks and a total of 42 weeks. The remaining non-film tracks were split across three different albums in the US. The most well-known of these, "Yesterday", was also released as a single in September and later reached number one for four weeks.
