Meat Is Murder is the second studio album by English rock band The Smiths, released on 11 February 1985 on Rough Trade Records. The album was produced by the band's guitarist Johnny Marr and Morrissey and was recorded at Matrix Studios in London in late 1984. The album's title track was released as the album's lead single in January 1985. Upon its release, Meat Is Murder was met with a favorable response from music critics, who praised the album's musical diversity and Marr's production. The album reached number two in the UK album chart and has since been certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). The album spawned three further singles, "How Soon Is Now?", "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" and "I Know It's Over". Meat Is Murder has been named one of the best albums of all time by many publications, including Rolling Stone, NME and Pitchfork.
