California post-hardcore band Thrice, formed in 1998, celebrates its 20th anniversary with a new official album. Longtime fans of the quartet know: Thrice never stands still; surprises are expected, which is why new albums are often accompanied by musical twists and turns. Not so with "Palms", the follow-up to 2016's "To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere". Dustin Kensrue (vocals, guitar), Teppei Teranishi (guitar), Eddie Breckenridge (bass) and Riley Breckenridge (drums), who have known each other since their school days, produced their debut on Epitaph with Eric Palmquist. While the seasoned producer took on vocals and drums, the band showed up on guitars. This freed the boys from the obligation to play every note perfectly, as Kensrue put it. "It's more about getting the right emotions out of the performance that connect on a deeper level," the frontman said. The result of this approach is a highly communicative, i.e. stylistically diverse album whose ten tracks range from piano ballads to aggressive records. To hardcore purists who turn up their noses at this, it must be said: passion and intensity are not just based on power, but also on attitude. And in this respect, the Californians really can't be faulted.
