War is the third studio album by Irish rock band U2, released in 1983. It was recorded at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin and produced by Steve Lillywhite. The album was commercially successful, reaching number one in several countries and was certified platinum seven times by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Music critics have called War one of U2's most overtly political albums and one of the band's most accessible. The album's lyrics deal with a variety of political topics, including the Cold War, the Troubles in Northern Ireland, and the AIDS epidemic. The album cover features a photograph of a Vietnamese girl, Kim Phuc, running naked after being burned in a napalm attack. This photograph was taken by Associated Press photographer Nick Ut and won the Pulitzer Prize for reportage photography in 1973. The album's lead single, "New Year's Day", was released in January 1983 and became a commercial success, reaching number one in several countries.
