World premiere recording The National Library in Paris houses a very unusual 17th-century manuscript of music for solo viola da gamba, which can only be found under the archive number Réserve 1111. The small landscape format, bound in leather, contains 270 pages. At least eight scribes contributed to this compilation, which is almost entirely notated in tablature. This book, which is generally regarded as a work of Brandenburg, was purchased by the National Library in Berlin in 1880. Towards the end of the Thirty Years' War, Brandenburg gradually returned to its former prosperity and stability under the rule of the 'Grand Elector' Frederick William, who reigned from 1640 to 1688. Many of the best gambists stayed temporarily at the court of Frederick William, who himself played the high violin. Rés. 1111 has never been published in facsimile or in a modern edition. Not only was it necessary to record a large number of pieces first, but it was also a question of creating a coherent and presentable combination. Here Juliane Laake gives an exciting account of her research, detective work and discovery.
