Rhythmic speaking, or singing rhyming lyrics to a beat, was all the rage among African-American youth in New York City in the late 1970s. Chanting became popular outside the Bronx and Harlem after the Sugarhill Gang's 1979 sales hit "Rapper's Delight" shot the new musical genre of hip-hop to the top. It was a time when Grandmaster Flash, Kool Herc and Afrika Bambaataa became icons and shaped the sound that purists now appreciate as old school. The "Boombox" compilation, lovingly compiled as usual by the Soul Jazz label and featuring a thick booklet, brings together 17 innovative recordings from 1979-82. The songs were released at that time by small Harlem labels that specialized in rhythm & blues, such as Enjoy, Winley, Delmar, and Rojac and Tayster. They were the first to recognize the commercial potential of hip hop and produced tracks with Mr. Sweety G, Super 3, Bon-Rock & The Rhythm Rebellion, Sugar Daddy, Master Jay, Harlem World Crew, Black Bird & Kevski, Spoonie Gee, Mistafide and Count Coolout. A selection of their songs can be found on the album "Boombox".
