The breathtaking compilation "Coxsone's Music" includes three CDs or four vinyls (including a free download code). That makes a total of two and a half hours of music. This music, however, does not come from Studio 1, which of course immediately comes to mind when one says Clement Dodd. Rather, it is "The First Recordings Of Sir Coxsone The Downbeat 1960-63", as the subtitle of the compilation reveals. We hear neither reggae nor dub, but tracks that Sir Coxsone recorded on cassettes with his downbeat sound system in the days before the founding of Studio One (established in 1963), i.e. proto-ska, rhythm & blues, jazz, gospel and Rastafarian music. These 46 tracks are some of the earliest recordings Dodd ever released, which are scattered on various labels. The album "Coxsone's Music 1960-1963" marks their first time together. They include Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, Derrick Harriott, Owen Gray Clancy Eccles, Count Ossie, Monty Alexander, The Blues Busters, Ernest Ranglin and Rico Rodriguez - big names today, but in the early 1960s they were emerging talents. If you want to tap into the pre-reggae era, you can't bypass this compilation.
