Guitarist Dean Brown, an American with strong roots in funk-jazz, created the basic idea of this album and put special emphasis on the aforementioned versatility, as he did not want to present a pure jazz or jazz-funk record, but rather to combine different sub-styles. He focused mainly on young artists. Most of the tracks on "Emergency Funk Radio" are instrumental and focus solely on the interplay of individual instruments. Jazz influences remain at the forefront, of course, but the listener will also find excursions into other areas, such as the Avi Bortnick co-written "Morning Star", a minimalist track with electronic elements. However, one can also hear enchanting vocals, such as the exceptional voice of Tonni Smith on Lettuce's "Twisted" or the more soulful vibes of Magnum Coltrane Price on "I Got Mine". Fans of the instrumental genre will find even more to their liking, with Sam Kiniger's somewhat oddly titled "32-84-31-St" or the groovy New York jazz trio Medeski, Martin & Wood, whose "Night Marchers" is more in the realm of funk, among the real listening picks.
