From the EMI archive: hits from Iraq in the late 1920s In the 1920s, the Gramophone Company (later EMI) sent emissaries to Iraq to listen to the music scene there. Disguised as Arabs, they visited record shops and concert halls. Three sessions were held in Baghdad, resulting in more than a thousand recordings. In Baghdad, shellacs sold like hot cakes. "Give Me Love - Songs Of The Brokenhearted - Baghdad, 1925-29" is the title of the second volume of the series featuring recordings from the famous EMI archive in Hayes. It provides a sense of the social life of a city where traditions, ethnicities and religions come together in a dazzling mix. We hear Arabic folk singers, singing prostitutes, songs from Bahrain and Kuwait, Kurdish violin improvisations and a Hebrew hymn that begins with a heartfelt "Allah!". And some of them even sound like a mix of John Coltrane and Sun Ra. All of the recordings have been remastered at Abbey Road Studios and come with English translations, rare photographs and sleeve notes.
