It is one of the great paradoxes of contemporary pop music that Nilsson, one of the most talented and respected American songwriters of the 20th century, is remembered primarily for his stone-cold classic recordings of two songs written by others: "Everybody's Talkin'" Fred Neil and "Without You" by Badfinger. "Gotta Get Up!" seeks to remedy that by highlighting two dozen Nilsson songs from 1965 to 1972, including several he didn't officially record. Highlights include "Cuddly Toy" and "Daddy's Song" performed by Nilsson's champions The Monkees, Al Kooper's harmony-filled recording of "Mournin' Glory Story," a version of Nilsson's autobiographical "1941" by Canadian folkie Tom Northcott, and MFQ's Phil Spector-produced "This Could Be The Night," one of Brian Wilson's favorite recordings. The fully illustrated booklet includes copious notes by Mick Patrick and Ian Johnston.
