Product Information Like the Motown sound of the mid-'60s, the Philadelphia sound of the '70s didn't suddenly appear overnight with the founding of Philadelphia International Records and the rise of international stars like the O'Jays, Three Degrees and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. Our new Kent release, Nothing But A Houseparty, focuses its attention on the years 1967-1971 and provides a first-rate overview of how recording in Philadelphia shifted from the lightweight Cameo-Parkway sound of the early '60s to a much more inventive and sophisticated one. Most of the musicians heard on these tracks became part of the MFSB, the musical backbone of almost all black American recordings made in Philadelphia between 1971 and 1976. Many of the songwriters and producers also became much more famous in the 1970s after honing their craft on these and many other classic recordings. Some of the artists featured here found themselves marginalized in the late 1970s, while others moved their recording bases elsewhere - but all played a significant role in developing Philadelphia's status as one of the most important soul music cities of the 20th century. With a lavishly annotated and illustrated booklet and the superb mastering you'd expect from Kent, this release should not be overlooked by any serious soul fan.
