- It's been part of the British musical DNA for so many years that it's hard to imagine a time when Motown was trying to make a name for itself here. Incredibly, not one of the forty-five songs released in their catalogue on various labels made it into the UK charts in the company's first five years - Motown's initial failure here made their early catalogue suitable for any British artist who wanted to score a hit with a quality track. After the Beatles recorded three Motown songs for their second album, local artists queued up to snap up Motown copyrights - Not all of these home versions were artistically successful, but Ace's album "On The Detroit Beat!" brings together two dozen of those that were, from some of our best-known and best-loved singers and groups of the beat era (and beyond). On this CD, you'll hear Cilla Black singing Junior Walker, Elkie Brooks taking on the Temptations, the Hollies covering the Miracles, and many more - the tracks you'll find here include both big Motown hits and relatively unknown titles, almost all of which were edited to become hits where the original versions stalled. If the Motown sound itself was difficult to replicate, the spirit of the original versions is ever-present and correct in all 24 performances - As always, the CD booklet has been remastered from the best available sources and includes copious annotations and a wealth of period illustrations, record labels and everything else you'd expect from an Ace label release.
