After all, coffee berries were discovered in Ethiopia more than 1,000 years ago. Mayoro "Yoro" Ndiaye, Les Frères Guissé and Takeifa are the outstanding second-line singers and composers who introduce us to the surprising acoustic aspects of Senegal. One of Africa's most compelling vocal trios, TotoBonaLokua, returns after 14 years. With Oliver Mtukudi, we are graced by a great old master from Zimbabwe. Icons from the Congo are also present: Franco and his group OK Jazz take us back to the days of rumba, while Ray Lema leads his two compatriots Ballou Cantu and Fredy Massamba in a team collaboration with Brazilian Rodrigo Viana. Undiscovered Congolese folklore sounds from Jean "Jaja" Bashengezi from Lake Kivu. Kenya's Winyo was inspired by Benga's guitar style for his acoustic world. Finally, Malian Rokia Traoré offers us a meditative love song from early in her career.
