Various: Soul Of A Nation (Afro-Centric Visions In The Age of Black Power: Underground Jazz, Street Funk & The Roots Of Rap 1968-79) Die Version auf Vinyl 2LP in Standard- Auflage. Diese besondere Auflage wurde veröffentlicht in UK im Verlag Soul Jazz Records am 25. August 2017.
In a way, this compilation is the soundtrack to the exhibition "Soul Of A Nation: Art In The Age Of Black Power", which will be on view at London's Tate Gallery and New York's Brooklyn Museum in 2017. The compilation explores the influence that the Civil Rights Movement and Black Nationalism, in the vein of Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and the Black Panther Party, had on radical African American musical role models in the US in the late 1960s. Among the artists featured in Soul Jazz are such icons as Gil Scott-Heron, Roy Ayers, Don Cherry, Oneness of Juju, Sarah Webster Fabio, Horace Tapscott and Phil Ranelin. Their works show how political issues led to the development of a "conscious black music" that culminated in the various popular Afrocentric styles of this era of change - the radical spirituality of John Coltrane, the radical avant-gardism of Sun Ra, the funk of James Brown, the soul of Aretha Franklin, and the urban proto-rap poetry of the metropolis. As is typical of soul jazz, the entire publication is richly illustrated with extensive accompanying texts and exclusive photographs.
