In the 1950s and '60s, Cincinnati's record scene was dominated by Syd Nathan's King label, which became a major player among postwar independent labels thanks to its R&B catalog. In its shadow was Fraternity, a smaller concern founded in 1954 by Harry Carlson. The well-respected Carlson began building a roster of artists that reflected his conservative musical tastes, and a few years later he scored hits for Cathy Carr and Jimmy Dorsey that cemented his position as an independent label to be reckoned with. In this article, we'll focus on recordings by influential guitar hero Lonnie Mack, soul girl group the Charmaines, blues singer and guitarist Albert Washington and female duo The 2 Of Clubs, who are definitely not part of the MOR Fraternity. For those who have had their appetites fixed by this old-fashioned seven-inch vinyl sampler, other Fraternity recordings by each of these artists can be found elsewhere in the Ace Records catalogue. For now, though, you can enjoy four great examples of the mid-'60s Cincinnati sound.
