After Jamaica gained its independence from the British Crown in August 1962, the Caribbean island became a music star, with ska, rocksteady and reggae triumphantly taking the world by storm. In the midst of it all: Clement Dodd and his label Studio One, founded in 1963 on Brentford Road in Kingston. In the 1960s, "Sir Coxsonne" not only gathered Jamaica's most talented voices under his roof, led by Alton Ellis, Delroy Wilson, The Wailers, Slim Smith and Jackie Opel, but also the most gifted musicians worked for his empire, which included a recording studio, record shop and pressing plant: The Skatalites, Jackie Mittoo's Soul Brothers, The Sounds Dimension, The Soul Vendors. Like Motown in the US at the same time, Studio One released at least one new hit every week, leaving its mark on the decade. Studio One, which at its peak employed approximately 50 people and hundreds of musicians, is still Jamaica's most successful record label today. The "Freedom Sounds" compilation is a look back at that golden era and features 18 classic ska, rocksteady, soul and reggae tracks by Don Drummond & Co. among others. The Skatalites ("Rain Or Shine"), Peter Tosh ("I Am The Toughest"), Roland Alphonso ("Reggae In The Grass"), Delroy Wilson ("Get Ready"), Alton Ellis ("Sunday Coming"), Ernest Ranglin ("Psychedelic Rock"), Jackie Mittoo ("Hi Jack") and Bob Marley & The Wailers ("Destiny").
