It wasn't really a movement, but rather a moment that revealed a new, particularly positive musical direction. De La Soul's debut album "3 Feet High And Rising" combined pop, R&B and hip hop. In the UK, it was also inspired by the "Native Tongues" collective from New York. Among them were the Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifah, A Tribe Called Quest, Black Sheep, De La Soul, Brand Nubian/Grand Puba, Monie Love and Black Star. The hallmark of this association was the spread of political consciousness in African-American society and in hip hop, which was to extend to the middle class. Because hip hop music had previously been aimed more at the socially disadvantaged classes, more intellectual content prevailed, which, while welcomed by middle-class society, was too far removed from the ghettos and the streets to be appealing there. The releases of these groups were usually characterized by a very experimental sound and intellectual lyrics that contrasted with the prevailing gangsta rap.
