Franz Schubert's Variations for flute and piano on the song "Trockne Blumen" from the cycle "Die schöne Müllerin" is considered the most important flute work of the Romantic period. The flutist Ulf-Dieter Schaaff, who lives in Berlin and teaches in Weimar, has found other literature for flute and piano from the Viennese cosmos and confronts it with Schubert's work. With this "Airmail from Vienna" he has succeeded in creating a wonderful compilation: highly virtuosic and lyrical, classical and modern, atonal and jazz. The "Fantaisie pastorale hongroise" by the flautist, composer, conductor and teacher Albert Franz Doppler (1821-1883) is today very popular among flautists and the public as a bravura composition. As a co-founder of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the first flutist of the Vienna Court Opera, Doppler not only had a great command of his instrument but was able to combine Viennese charm, compositional skill and folk elements into a virtuosic work. His Viennese colleagues, however, were no less skilled. Cerha, Krenek and Pisk follow in the footsteps of composers of the second Viennese school. Paul Amadeus Pisk (1893-1990) was a pupil of Schoenberg, and Ernst Krenek (1900-1991) studied with Franz Schreker and Schoenberg was his musical model. With his arrangement of Berlioz's "Sylphentanz" for flute and piano, Joseph Diermaier presents a colourful contemporary Vienna. Ulf-Dieter Schaaff has been principal flutist of the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin (RSB) since 1995. He was born in Düsseldorf, studied in Berlin and Basel and passed his concert exam with András Adorjan in Cologne.
