In the mid-1990s, David Coverdale was declared "the last great rock star" by the English rock magazine Kerrang! In an ever-changing music market with countless new stars who have yet to prove their historical relevance, this accolade is more relevant today than ever. The fact is that Coverdale is an exceptional musician with a past, present and future. With his band Whitesnake since 1978, he has had the perfect platform for his musical ideas. On April 18, 2008, the brand new Whitesnake album Good To Be Bad will be released, an eleven-song masterpiece with all the important hallmarks of the band and a noticeable breath of fresh air created by Coverdale's fantastic voice and the current lineup. Good To Be Bad is pure Whitesnake, a detailed description of this classy disc is unnecessary. It took nearly eleven long years before fans could finally look forward to a new studio album. Eleven years during which many rumors circulated about the future of Whitesnake. Coverdale always answered correctly: first he put together a hungry new lineup and thrilled his fans with a frenzied world tour. "I've been inspired and motivated by the musicians I work with and the positive reaction of the people who have come out to see us and support us. I'm back in the saddle and for the first time in many years I was ready to write new songs and record them." Accordingly, he set about producing the new album, which features eight big rock songs and three ballads, and which sounds even more homogeneous and powerful in its own right than his last album to date, Restless Heart. "Restless Heart was more of a Coverdale solo album. That's how it all started until EMI told me they wanted it to be a Whitesnake record," Coverdale explains the circumstances of the record's release in '97. "We had to juggle it a bit and adapt it to the Whitesnake format. Whereas Good To Be Bad is a true Whitesnake album from start to finish." That's partly why the new record sounds so unmistakably Whitesnake. "The heart and soul of Whitesnake remains the same for me. But how could it be otherwise? The band is and always has been very valuable to me - it helps me express myself. I hope it does the same for the musicians who work under its creative umbrella. Moreover, this band is almost a serum of youth for me!" Doug Aldrich holds a key position in the current Whitesnake line-up. The gifted guitarist and songwriter has proven to be Coverdale's perfect touring partner and he makes a great showing on Good To Be Bad. "From the beginning, it was natural for Doug and I to write together, and it was completely effortless and fun," Coverdale praises his musical partner, emphasizing Aldrich's high contribution to the overall result, "It's a 50/50 collaboration in terms of the songs. He's a very talented musician and also helped with the engineering and mixing of the album, so he was involved in this project from the first step to the last. Something like this has never happened before with Whitesnake. He is very meticulous and passionate about his work. Luckily, his passion includes the music of Whitesnake. Doug brings an incredible energy and urgency to the band, helping us push the boundaries even further without negating our original approach." It's no wonder, then, that Good To Be Bad has become not only a great album, but one that can undoubtedly rank among the best recordings in the band's long history. "For my taste, the record has all the elements, all the ingredients that I love about Whitesnake," says Coverdale. "It's a very down-to-earth, muscular, melodic rock record with some gentle ballads, so there's always a little bit of tenderness when it needs it. The ballads also help provide a balance between the breakneck songs. I think it's a homogeneous work. It contains a lot of musical substance, a positive chapter in the big book of Whitesnake." And that chapter, of course, includes Coverdale's unique timbre. His voice is perfectly suited to the material on Good To Be Bad, whether on the rocking "All For Love," "Lay Down Your Love" or the soulful ballads "All I Want All I Need" and "Summer Rain." "I'm able to sing everything from a whisper to a scream," Coverdale says, "and all aspects in between as well, which is very enjoyable. We've also tried new tones for my singing, which has made it new, interesting and fun." You can feel the fun the Whitesnake musicians are having in the studio with every note. The conditions could hardly have been better, however, as in addition to Coverdale and Aldrich, longtime friend Michael McIntyre was a co-producer. Not to mention the band's top-notch cast. Coverdale: "It's always been all the influences of the past that come together to make Whitesnake. Add to that the welcome fresh ideas of Doug, Chris Frazier, Timothy Drury, Uriah Duffy and Reba Beach. Chris has brought back a kind of Paice-esque vibe to the band. He swings, grooves, rocks and rolls, which is a great foundation to build on. Whitesnake have found the right rhythm again!" And they're looking to prove it on their big European tour, which starts in June 2008. "We'll be celebrating Whitesnake's 30th anniversary with a great live show, including songs from the new record, which incidentally is our tenth studio album. Everyone is guaranteed to have a good time, so don't miss the party!"
