Nearly two decades into their journey as ritualistic black metal wizards, Wolves In The Throne Room emerged from the woods with their most majestic album yet. "Primordial Arcana" is the band's first completely independent effort: in addition to writing and playing, the Weaver brothers and guitarist Kody Keyworth handled all aspects of recording, production and mixing at their own Owl Lodge studio in the woods of Washington State. The album's title refers to the band's constant turning to the oldest archetypal energies. While the proverbial fire in the northern sky remains the band's artistic palette, "Primordial Arcana" expands black metal to include musical forms that predate the genre's devastating second wave. "After discovering Metallica and Slayer at an early age, Deicide and Morbid Angel were the first extreme metal bands we liked," explains Aaron Weaver. "So death metal was there from the beginning and I think it really came into its own on this record." Symphonic black metal was also a major inspiration. "We wanted to emphasize the role of the synths and create an epic and grand atmosphere," explains Aaron. All of which is further proof that Wolves In The Throne Room are a band like few of their contemporaries. "I think we have a unique voice in the world of extreme metal," says Aaron. "We come from an unadulterated and personal point of view and we don't make any concessions to what is expected of us."
