The Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Saarbrücken, now known as the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, is a German radio orchestra based in Saarbrücken, the capital of the state of Saarland. Founded in 1937, it has a long history of performing and recording classical music. The orchestra has been involved in various recording projects, including the complete symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven. Under the baton of notable conductors such as Michael Gielen, who served as its chief conductor from 1971 to 1977, the orchestra has gained recognition for its interpretations of classical and contemporary repertoire. The Michael Gielen Edition Vol. 2 1968-2013 is a testament to Gielen's extensive work with the orchestra and other ensembles over several decades, showcasing a wide range of performances from his career. The Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Saarbrücken has contributed significantly to the classical music scene with its performances and recordings, both under its original name and its current one after merging with the Radio Orchestra Kaiserslautern in 2007.
