The work of the nine symphonies by the leading Czech neo-Romantic composer Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904) has been one of the cornerstones of the European symphonic repertoire as a whole since its completion until today. The power of Dvořák's melodic invention has never ceased to captivate scholars and the general public alike. After all, it was also considered breathtaking by many of the composer's distinguished contemporaries (as evidenced by Brahms' statement: 'Dvořák's themes for his minor ideas would easily have provided me with enough material for the major themes in my own work...'. Today - after the demise of the unfounded and unfair speculation about Dvořák's "simplicity" in terms of compositional technique, a theory that became quite widespread in Bohemia in its day thanks to the largely ideological influence of the ultra-leftist scholar (and politician) Zdeněk Nejedlý, but which can easily be proven false when tested on any of the composer's scores - the star of Dvořák's creative genius shines brightest in the sky of world music. His last four symphonies, in particular, have firmly established themselves as staples of the repertoire adopted by professional symphony orchestras around the world, and which have been embraced by audiences worldwide for their brilliant and universally rewarding instrumentation. This digital recording, made in the 1980s, draws on the centuries-old authentic performance tradition of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, whose early history saw Antonín Dvořák himself in the conductor's chair, followed by such legends of the baton as Václav Talich, Karel Ančerl and, of course, in his day, Václav Neumann, a Dvořák specialist and an artist of inimitable charisma.
