First Flight Tokyo documents the historic performance that revolutionized jazz culture in Japan. This is a previously unreleased live album from Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers' first tour of Japan in 1961, featuring the powerhouse line-up of Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter. The recordings for this album were made for the documentary film "Kuroi Sakuretsu" that accompanied the tour in Japan. After unresolved rights issues prevented the release of the film, the whereabouts of the master tape were unknown for a long time. In 2017, it was discovered in the estate of one of the film's crew members, and after several years of searching, it has now been released worldwide by Blue Note Records in the US. The CD booklet includes an interview with Wayne Shorter conducted by Don Was, President of Blue Note Records, as well as interviews with saxophonist Sadao Watanabe, music critic Reiko Yukawa, and a contribution from Ryuichiro Nemoto, who discovered the recordings. A live recording from Hibiya Public Hall in Tokyo, January 14, 1961. Co-producers for the reissue are Zev Feldman and David Weiss. This title is an SHM SACD. This format is a further development of the single-layer SACD and uses a particularly lightweight transparent plastic (Super High Material). This makes it possible to read the structures of the wells on the surface much better than is possible with hybrid SACDs. Universal's SHM SACDs are usually redigitized in DSD from album master tapes without any changes. SHM SACDs can be played on any SACD player.
