This Panamanian-born drummer is still considered a ne-plus-ultra when it comes to fusion drumming - no one else combines rock aggression with the complexity of jazz so consistently and impressively. Before embarking on a solo career with Atlantic in 1973, Billy Cobham backed the pioneering works of Miles Davis ("Live-Evil") and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, which he co-founded ("The Inner Mounting Flame," "Birds Of Fire"). With the album "Spectrum" he immediately managed to create a classic that has lost none of its class to this day, recorded in just three days in a quartet with keyboardist Jan Hammer, guitarist Tommy Bolin and the still highly sought after bassist Lee Sklar. The track "Stratus" also survives as a sample in Massive Attack's hit "Safe From Harm" - a late echo of Cobham's own experiments with electronic drums. For the all-original "Crosswinds" in 1974, he enlisted keyboardist George Duke, the Brecker brothers and guitarist John Abercrombie. That same year, Cobham made his piano debut on the Total Eclipse album ("The Moon Ain't Made Of Green Cheese") and drummed solo on "Last Frontier," while Abercrombie found funk on the classic "Moon Germs." But things didn't really get funky until 1975's "The Funky Thide Of Sings" (sic!), with John Scofield on guitar and Cobham immortalizing perhaps his best solo on the quasi-title track "The Funky Kind Of Thing". Finally, "Shabazz" features Billy Cobham and his band Total Eclipse live in Montreux at the height of their powers with two new tracks (the title track, "Tenth Pin") and exciting new improvised editions of "Spectrum" "Taurian Matador" and "Red Baron".
