It's the sound of change. The musical voice of a new way of thinking. And the beginning of arguably the steepest career in music history. The album Freewheelin' was Bob Dylan's artistic and commercial breakthrough. Relative to his previous album, it was a huge leap, because let's be clear: Bob Dylan's first album was a flop. It sold about 5,000 copies, the record company barely covered its costs, and producer John Hammond had to endure a lot of ridicule. How fortunate that it didn't shake his faith in the young artist! And so, in 1962, The Freewheelin' was formed. This time Dylan didn't rely on cover versions as on his debut album, but he showed his songwriting talent and titles like Blowin' in the wind, Masters of War and A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall took the wind out of the critics' sails. Dylan's songs reflected the fears, problems and emotions the country was facing. With almost haunting honesty, a clear moral worldview, and biting criticism, he pointed out the insanity of war, the hypocrisy of segregation, and the need for civil rights and freedom. In addition, he is equally talented in the hilarious, absurdly comic Bob Dylan's Blues or Bob Dylan's Dream, or singing haunting love songs (Girl From the North Country). Dylan released many other excellent albums, but he never topped "The Freewheelin'".

The Freewheelin' war Bob Dylans künstlerischer und kommerzieller Durchbruch. Angesichts seines Vorgängeralbums war es ein Quantensprung, denn man muss es so deutlich sagen: das erste Album von Bob Dylan war ein Flop. Mit etwa 5.000 verkauften Exemplaren deckte die Plattenfirma gerade die entstandenen Kosten und Produzent John Hammond musste sich so manchen Spott gefallen lassen. Wie gut, dass dieser ihn nicht in seinem Glauben an den jungen Künstler erschüttern konnte! So entstand 1962 The Freewheelin'. Statt wie auf dem Debütalbum auf Coverversionen zu setzen, zeigte Dylan diesmal sein Talent als Liedermacher und nahm mit Titeln wie Blowin' In The Wind, Masters Of War und A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall seinen Kritikern allen Wind aus den Segeln.

Dylans Songs sind der Spiegel der Sorgen, Themen und Emotionen, mit denen ein ganzes Land befasst war. Mit nahezu aufdringlicher Ehrlichkeit, einer eindeutig moralischen Weltanschauung und beißender Kritik zeigt er mit dem Finger auf den Irrsinn des Krieges, die Scheinheiligkeit der Rassentrennung, die Notwendigkeit von Bürgerrechten und Freiheit. Daneben zeigt er mit gleicher Begabung in Bob Dylan's Blues oder Bob Dylan's Dream auch eine heitere, absurd-komische Seite oder singt hinreißende Liebeslieder (Girl From The North Country). Dylan veröffentlichte noch viele weitere hervorragende Alben, doch übertraf er nie »The Freewheelin'«.
